Simile Poem

Your hair looks like a palm tree growing out on a beach
like thunderstruck your head on purpose
like a thin wire being twisted a million times,
like strands of instant noodles wating to be boiled
without carefully looking into you,
its hard to find your face hiding under the "leaves"
a mordern day cave man herding dog's fur
a corscrew without the top.
Like the wave length of gamma rays,
like curled up fries
like spaghetti twisted around the for,
a ball of twited knitting wool
cut into long trands
like a spring stretched out with force
like the curvy lines around a painting
like the tangled cords of your headphone
With all my respect,
for the only one of the best.

THE CHRYSALIDS INDEPENDENT PROJECT #2: SOUNDTRACT TO A SCENE

The Chrysalids: Independent Inquiry Project #2 Soundtrack to a Scene

The Chrysalids is a book that briefly described the life of abnormal people in the future, and how they didn't find acceptance in the Waknuk society. They need to pretend they are just normal people because once someone found out about their deviation they will either be killed or heavily punished. I remember in chapter 4 when Uncle Axel found out that David has the ability to telepath and talk to people far away through their minds, the first thing he told David is to keep that as secret. Uncle Axel is David’s closest and most understanding relative, he doesn't want David to get in to trouble. David understood how his ability is unnatural, and made up his mind to keep that a secret forever. After reading this, I can relate this scene in the novel to a song that also described how people keep secrets to themselves. It's a song sung by a band named Foo Fighters and the name of the song is called The Pretender. I personally really like the song because it has a catchy melody and its well sang by the singer. The lyric in the song matches to the main character’s feeling at that time. Its easy to understand that David need to pretend like he is just a normal person without knowing his super power. One line in the lyrics says: “What if I say I’m not like the others.” I think this is what David is thinking at that point of the story. It happens many times in life that you have things that you really want to express but you can’t because it cannot be told. If there is a film version of the story, this song would definitely be featured at that time of the movie.

The Chrysalids: Independent Project #1 David's Diary Entry

The Chrysalids: Independent Project- David’s Diary Entry (Chapter 1)

March 23rd, 3031
In the afternoon, I went to the high bank I used to play by myself, after having a recurring dream.  Again I dreamed of this amazing city bordered by the ocean. I’ve once told this story to my sister but she warned me not to take this seriously.  That city may not exist, and would not exist under the Tribulation. I must get rid of these miserable thoughts so I visited the high bank. I was sliding up and down, until I see a girl coming up to me and asked me whether what I’m doing is fun or not. I was astonished by what that girl’s question, and I thought no one would ever want to talk to a boring kid like me.  I told her it’s very amusing and asked if she would want to join my game. She agreed but what happened next has made my life more miserable than ever.

We were just sliding up and down the dune and having a lot of fun until she stuck her feet in a small crevice. I wasn’t worried at first because she could simply take off her shoes and pull her foot out between the two stones. She insisted not to. I was confused by her idea but I still tried to make an effort. After my convincement, she finally agreed to pull off her shoe, but she told me not to tell anyone what I’ll see. At that time, I was like wow that Sophie must have very ugly foot. To my surprise, I noticed that Sophie’s foot has an extra toe. Later I carried her back to her house, and met her mother in her house. Her name is Ms. Wenders, she talked to me in a very serious tone and told me to keep that as a secret because we all know the result when someone found out about Sophie’s deviation. I promised her mother that I will not tell anyone about what I saw today.

On my way back home I felt like 10 tons of weight has dropped on my shoulder. Until now I still can’t get that image off of my head. Instead of hating Sophie of her deviation, I actually felt sorry for her and how much arguments she will need to take if someone found out. Now I start to realize keeping a secret is not as easy as I thought.

First Day of School Poem

It's the first day of school for me.
I’m nervous but at the same time excited to check out that awesome place to be.
I put my pencil case and my lunch box into my bag.
Also the raincoat just in case I’ll need to play in the rain.
I’ve put on my boots as soon as I finished the breakfast.
Without any other thoughts,
I’m all set and ready to go.

Descriptive Essay: The Oldest Person I Know

The Oldest Person I Know
By Kevin Chen (Block C)

How do we define old people? Usually the old people are the seniors who are higher than most people in age. They’re an important part of our society, and make up a fair amount of our population. What if one day someone asked you who is the oldest person you know. Who would be the first person that comes to your mind? You would probably think about your grandma or grandpa, or the old man in wheelchair who lived beside your house for over 20 years. For me, the person that comes to my mind first is my great-grandma.

My great-grandmother whos is my mom’s grandma; she is now almost 100 years old. In my memory, she is always that laborious lady that seems never been able to get a break from all the housework. When I was born, she is already 71 years old. Her age can easily be seen from the wrinkles and loose muscles on her arm. The hair is very exiguous, that you can see her scalp from the top, and the hair that still remains are already grey.  She always wears that same antique cotton coat from almost centuries ago. There’re several mending on that the coat, but she still likes it more than all the other clothes that we bought her.  Another of her habits is keeping old things. If you get a chance to visit her drawer, you will be able to find many interesting things. It varies from a series of toys my mom used to play to a collection of postal stamps from 1940s. One time I’ve actually get a chance to see all the “collection” of my grandma, I counted that there are 40 different types of materials found in her drawer including a first generation Motorola cell phone that no longer functions.

The smell of her room is also very special and memorable. It's a mixture of all different types of spices that she uses for cooking, and it varies from time to time. Whenever she cooks something salty, the room will also smell the same. It’s hard to describe how can that happen?? Sometimes it’s easy for me to guess what they ate for dinner last night just by staying in my grandma’s room. Every time if I guessed it right, she will always ask me curiously how did you know that?

Washing dishes, cleaning rooms, and wiping table are all jobs that my great-grandma did for more than half of her life. If you ever get to see her working, you will be surprised by her agility to do all the housework. Especially the speed that she wipes the floor, it seems that she can finish the whole floor in around just 5 minutes. Don't doubt about the quality, it’s cleaner than me doing it for the whole day.  Also washing dishes is another specialty for my great-grandma. Every time I go to my grandparents’ house, my great-grandma will do everything from cooking to cleaning. She will cook many of the dishes that you like and forces you to finish all even if it tastes bad. Then, before you even finish eating, she already starts to gather the empty plates and start washing them. It may seem rude to those who first went to my great-grandma’s place. But after a few times, you’ll get use to her.

As time passes by, my great-grandma was no longer been able so sharp with doing housework. Instead she always carry a walking stick with her back is hurting all the time and she can merely walk by herself. Every day, she has to take many medications to keep her safe from heart attacks, because she was sent to the hospital many times because she was ill and had to rest in bed for many weeks. Now we have to get my grandma one of those signal transporters that connects to the emergency. Since my grandparents might not be home all the time, so whenever she is sick, she can just press one of those buttons and the hospital will know that she needs help.

My great-grandma until now is the oldest person I know. She is also one of the most important people that really influenced me to be hardworking and willing to contribute to the family. I hope she can healthily and be happy everyday of her life.
